According to Hindu tradition, the swash Ganges is believed to have begun from the matted cinches of Lord Shiva. It’s said that the goddess Ganga descended to the earth to cleanse the ashes of King Bhagiratha’s ancestors, who had performed severe austerities to assuage Lord Shiva. Still, the immense power of the swash was too important for the earth to bear, and Lord Shiva agreed to break its fall by letting it flow through his matted cinches. The holy River Ganges generates from the Gangotri glacier from here and is called Bhagirathi.
